The Story Behind Ureña & Associates

Rafael Urena did not start in immigration law. After graduating with Pro Bono Honors from American University Washington College of Law, he began his career as an Assistant District Attorney in the Bronx.

That prosecutorial background proved invaluable. Criminal records and immigration status intersect in ways that make or break a case, and knowing how prosecutors think changes the way you defend someone facing removal.

He eventually transitioned to immigration law, spending years handling petitions and deportation defense at other firms before founding this one. Today, Managing Attorney Jana Al-Akhras directs day-to-day case strategy alongside a dedicated team of associate attorneys and paralegals. 

Together, our firm has taken the federal government to court over stalled visa processing and challenged policies that systematically delayed petitions for Yemeni-American families.

Our office sits on West Street in Brooklyn, a short ride from the immigration courts at 26 Federal Plaza and Varick Street, where much of our removal defense work happens. Proximity is convenient, but staying in the borough is a choice. Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, Greenpoint, and the Arabic-speaking neighborhoods across Kings County are where a great many of our clients live and raise children.
